Bio: wo Schiffman

I began my art career in oil painting as an apprentice to a local artist and continued my education through formal art classes, fellowships and residencies abroad and in the US. For over 20 years I focused on textiles both as art and as fashion. I hold 12 patents in textile designs for the fashion industry.

Encaustic Work

For the past 5 years I have focused exclusively on painting - migrating to encaustic painting from my previous experimentation in encaustic textile work. I use both commercial and handmade pigments along with pure beeswax and damar resin.

Artists Who Inspire Me

Remembering Georgia, 16" x 16" encaustic on board

Georgia O'Keefe 1887 - 1986

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way--things I had no words for."

"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life - and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do."

"Nobody sees a flower -- really -- it is so small it takes time. We haven't time. To see takes time."

Painting: Essence: Homage to Ms. O'Keefe, Encaustic on Board, Wo Schiffman 2017

Gaia, 12" x 12", encaustic on board

Yayo Kusama 1929 -

"I wanted to start a revolution, using art to build the sort of society I myself envisioned."

"I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieves my illness is to keep creating art. I followed the thread of art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live."

Painting: Gaia Cleansing the Earth, Encaustic on Wood, Wo Schiffman, 2017

Smoke Dreams, 16" x 16", encaustic on board

Bill Atkinson 1951 -

"Photography begins not in the camera but in the mind and the eye."

"The real work is one of noticing and appreciating, seeing things clearly and differently, and sharing that vision with others."

"I have developed my vision and my craft in order to bring the beauty of nature to light in a fresh way that can inspire and nourish people."
